What does skin laxity mean, and what concerns fall into this category?

Skin laxity refers to the loss of skin's firmness and elasticity that occurs with age, resulting in sagging or crepey skin rather than lines caused by muscle movement. This category covers a wide range of related concerns, including sagging skin, sagging cheeks, jowling, turkey neck, neck bands, drooping lids, crepey skin on the neck and chest, body skin laxity, thinning and aging skin on the hands, veiny hands, marionette lines, nasolabial folds, vertical lip lines, and chest redness. These concerns are grouped together because they generally share a common underlying cause: the gradual breakdown of collagen and elastin that comes with aging.

Why does skin laxity affect the face, neck, and hands differently?

Skin thickness and fat distribution vary significantly across the body, which is why laxity shows up differently in different areas. Facial laxity often appears as jowling, sagging cheeks, or drooping lids as supporting facial fat and muscle shift downward. The neck and chest, where skin is thinner and more delicate, tend to show crepiness and banding rather than sagging. The hands, which have little underlying fat, often show thinning, veininess, and visible aging before other areas. Because of these differences, treatment approaches are typically tailored to the specific area being addressed.

Is skin laxity reversible without surgery?

Many patients see meaningful improvement in skin firmness and texture through non-surgical treatments, particularly when laxity is mild to moderate. Results vary depending on the severity of sagging, the area treated, and individual skin quality. More advanced or severe laxity may see a more modest improvement from non-surgical options compared to earlier-stage concerns. A consultation allows your provider to set realistic expectations based on your specific degree of laxity before recommending a treatment plan.

What is the difference between marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and vertical lip lines?

Nasolabial folds are the creases that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, while marionette lines extend from the corners of the mouth down toward the chin, both related to volume loss and skin laxity in the lower face. Vertical lip lines, sometimes called smoker's lines, are the fine vertical creases that form above and around the lips, often from a combination of repeated lip movement and thinning skin. While related, each responds to slightly different treatment considerations based on its location and underlying cause.

How long do improvements in skin laxity typically last?

Because skin laxity is a progressive, ongoing part of the aging process, results from treatment are generally not permanent and most patients benefit from periodic maintenance to sustain firmness over time. How long results last depends on the treatment chosen, the area treated, and individual factors like skin quality, sun exposure, and lifestyle. Your provider will discuss an expected maintenance schedule specific to your treatment plan during your consultation.
